How long does car transport take in NZ? Real transit times by route
The honest answer depends on distance, the Cook Strait, and how often trucks run your route. Here's what to actually expect.

Short North Island runs (Auckland-Hamilton, Auckland-Tauranga) are usually same-day or next business day.
Main-centre North Island routes (Auckland-Wellington) typically take 1 business day after collection.
Inter-island moves (Auckland-Christchurch, Wellington-Christchurch) run 1-4 business days depending on the leg and ferry sailing.
Full-length runs (Auckland-Queenstown, Auckland-Invercargill) take 4-6 business days.
Truck frequency. Daily routes collect fast. Routes that run weekly, which includes anything crossing Cook Strait, wait for the next scheduled truck.
The ferry. Inter-island timing depends on Interislander and Bluebridge sailings, and weather can delay crossings. We book the sailing as part of your quote and plan around it.
Collection windows. A car booked by mid-morning on a daily route can be on a truck that afternoon. A Friday afternoon booking often rolls to Monday.
Access. Rural pickups and tight urban addresses sometimes add a day while we coordinate the right truck or a meeting point.
Book early in the day and early in the week. Monday bookings beat Friday bookings every time.
Be flexible on the pickup window. If your car can go on the next available truck rather than a specific date, it moves sooner.
Have the car ready. Fuel at a quarter tank or less, personal items out, alarm instructions written down. Delays at collection are the most avoidable ones.
Every booking gets a collection window and a delivery estimate in writing. The day before delivery we confirm timing, and your car is GPS-tracked in between so you always know where it is.
If a ferry or weather delay changes the plan, you hear it from us first, not from the person waiting at the other end.
On daily short-haul routes like Auckland-Hamilton and Auckland-Tauranga, same-day is often possible if you book by mid-morning. Inter-island moves can't be same-day because of the ferry.
Two reasons: South Island routes run weekly rather than daily, and the Cook Strait crossing adds a sailing to the schedule. Weather can also hold up ferries, which affects everyone crossing the strait.
Yes. Every vehicle we move is GPS-tracked, and we send updates so you know where it is and when to expect delivery.
