Door-to-door vs depot-to-depot car transport: which one suits you?

Both get your car there. The difference is who does the first and last few kilometres, and how much you pay for the convenience.

The two ways your car can travel

Door-to-door means we collect from your address and deliver to the address at the other end. Home, work, a dealership, a mate's place, anywhere a truck can safely stop.

Depot-to-depot means you drop the car at our depot and collect it from the depot at the destination. You handle the first and last few kilometres yourself, and the price reflects that.

What depot-to-depot costs

On our Tauranga to Christchurch run (and Christchurch back to Tauranga), depot-to-depot is a flat rate: $1,250 incl GST for a small car, $1,350 for a sedan and $1,450 for a ute or SUV. The Cook Strait ferry is included in that price.

Flat rate means exactly that. It is not a from price, the number you see is the number you pay for a vehicle that fits the category.

When door-to-door is worth it

You're selling or buying privately and neither party can get to a depot during working hours.

The car is at a workshop, auction house or seller's address and you just want it sorted.

You're moving house and have enough on your plate already.

Rural addresses, tight driveways and tricky access are all fine, if a truck can't make it we'll arrange the nearest safe meeting point before the day.

When depot-to-depot wins

You live or work near one of our depots and can drop off and pick up easily.

You want the sharpest price on an inter-island move and you're happy to do the short legs yourself.

Your timing is flexible. Depot drops suit people who can leave the car with us a day early or collect a day late.

The honest summary

Same trucks, same drivers, same care, same carrier's liability cover. The only difference is who drives the first and last few kilometres.

If convenience matters most, go door-to-door. If price matters most and a depot is handy, depot-to-depot is the smart play. Either way, request a quote or book the flat-rate run online and you'll have a fixed price before anything moves.

FAQs

Where are your depots?

Our Tauranga depot is at 40 Whiore Ave, Pyes Pa, and we operate from Christchurch for South Island runs. The flat-rate Tauranga-Christchurch service runs in both directions between the two depots.

Is the ferry really included in the depot-to-depot flat rate?

Yes. The $1,250 small car, $1,350 sedan and $1,450 ute/SUV rates all include the Cook Strait crossing and GST. No surcharges added later.

Can I mix and match, depot one end and door the other?

Yes, that's common. Drop at our Tauranga depot and have the car delivered to a Christchurch address, or the reverse. Request a quote and we'll price the mixed option.
